The Equus Effect

Programs for Veterans

The Home Stretch

for veterans only …

The Homestretch …a peer-to-peer program that meets you wherever you are on your journey back to life at home, work and school. These sessions are designed to address whatever issues and concerns are 'up' for you when you arrive at the farm.. We help make successful relationships possible by using the basic principles of natural horsemanship. These principles…also called 'horse whispering' involve gaining trust through emotional honesty, learning how to set healthy boundaries and communicating with clarity. Working this way with horses can help you…

  • Build emotional and mental resilience
  • Sleep better
  • Think more clearly
  • Increase self-awareness
  • Set healthy boundaries
  • Communicate more effectively
  • Experience for yourself that true power comes with finesse not force

We can show you how to BE better… not just DO better…in life.

The day Apache made a connection with me and chose to follow me on his own, demonstrated that he trusted me. It helped me realize that I could trust myself…because if a horse chooses to disregard his own hypervigilance and trusts, that means that I can do the same. TM-Marine

Warriors in Transition

for veterans and their loved ones

Warriors in Transition is a confidential program for veterans who want to focus on the more personal aspects of relationships at home. This program helps accelerate the transition from military to civilian life for all members of the family. Just like the 'round table', our round pen is a place where everyone can be seen and heard. Our equine coaches can show you how to ask for space, rebuild trust, restore healthy boundaries and communicate in a way that works. We can also help show you how to lead without force and relax without losing awareness.

  • Communicate more effectively
  • Learn to listen
  • Ask for space without getting angry
  • Collaborate rather than control
  • Make sense out of your emotions
  • Relax and enjoy the connection to those you love

I learned things about myself and my wife that I hadn't even thought of. There's something about the space those horses created that allowed me to understand things in a way I never did. When we left, we were able to talk about so much stuff without getting upset. EM – US Army

Veteran Mentor Program

Once you've completed enough sessions to understand the basic principles of non-verbal communication with our horses, you're eligible to earn a Certificate in Natural Horsemanship I and join our network of veterans liaisons. This aspect of our program is about serving others and helping new vets get acclimated to the farm and comfortable working with horses. Our aim is to build an authentic community where vets can BE better together…not just DO better on their own.

Watching other vets relax and learn some things about themselves if one of the best things I've done since coming home.

First Responders

Our veterans programs are a perfect fit for First Responders. We believe that learning to settle down, make distinctions among seemingly conflicting emotions and separating one's professional and personal life are all part of maintaining healthy relationships — and all part of ensuring top performance when you need it most.

  • Renew your energy and focus
  • Address your own reactions so that you're more capable of helping others
  • Learn practices and approaches to emergency situations that help others settle down
